How to get a Real Christmas Tree | Dad, how do I?
Roles: Shot + Edited
I got the chance to shoot and edit a video for the YouTube channel “Dad How Do I?” and it was a blast! Kristine who’s in the video and is Rob’s daughter, connected with me over Instagram! She acted in one of our University club’s film productions (https://www.luxfilmproductions.com/). A short film written and directed by Kaley Joss called Safe House (https://vimeo.com/433888924). I usually follow everyone who works on a club production, and Kristine and I messaged back and forth after it premiered! We then had a few zoom calls! Talking about story and the filmmaking process and she mentioned that during quarantine she and her Dad had started this channel called “Dad how do I?”. Given the context that we are in a global pandemic and the world is really stressful and lonely right now, she wanted to create a channel that gives Dad-advice. Meaning advice and life lessons that a Dad would pass on to their kid as they are growing up! To be a Dad to the internet in a way! Well the channel took off…
The channel all started with this video:
…it really hit a pulse Hitting 1 MILLION Views and The channel is currently at 2.8 Million SUbscribers! So that’s cool!

Some time passed and Kristine messaged me that they wanted someone to shoot and edit a video for the channel!! Specifically on “how to cut down a Christmas Tree” and that’s how it happened! Now typically “Dad, How Do I?” Videos are shot simply on a phone/tripod with long unbroken takes. It’s a home video tutorial! So with this I tried to maintain that sense of character but given all of the tasks we had to hit in the video we had to cut it down. So I decided to cut it like an episode of “Great British Bake Off”. Something that is wholesome, in-the-moment, and emphasizes character moments in the tasks that are being done. So it has a Vlog flare to it!
A tangent that is completely unrelated to this but have you noticed the editing difference between American cooking shows and British Cooking shows? American Cooking shows are edited like Action Films. Great British Bake Off is shot and edited in a more whimsical/wholesome way. Anyways, fun stuff!
